Deciding to see a private specialist for a haemorrhoid condition is already a personal step. When you then start searching for what surgery might cost and whether your MediSave, MediShield Life or Integrated Shield Plan will actually cover it, the information you find is often vague, incomplete or buried in insurance fine print.

Below you will find a clear, procedure-specific breakdown of what haemorrhoid (piles) surgery costs in Singapore: what the Ministry of Health (MOH) fee benchmarks say, what MediSave can cover, how your Integrated Shield Plan may reduce your out-of-pocket to near zero and how to make a well-informed decision before your first consultation.

Overview: In Singapore, haemorrhoid surgery (surgeon's fees) typically ranges from S$3,000 to S$4,200 depending on the procedure, with private hospital total bills ranging from S$8,894 to S$13,562. Final costs may vary based on factors such as hospital and facility fees, anaesthetist fees, investigations and prevailing GST.

Patients may utilise MediSave, MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans to help offset the cost of treatment. Consultation with our colorectal specialist starts from S$200.

Understanding Your Grade and Why It Determines Both the Procedure and the Price

Four-grade haemorrhoid classification diagram showing prolapse severity from Grade I to Grade IV

Not all haemorrhoid surgery is the same. The MOH Singapore and the colorectal surgery community use a four-grade classification system to determine the appropriate level of intervention. Your grade directly influences which surgical procedure is recommended and therefore what you will pay.

Grade I and Grade II: Office-Based Procedures

Grade I haemorrhoids bleed but do not prolapse. Grade II prolapse during a bowel movement but retract spontaneously. Both are typically managed with minimally invasive outpatient procedures that do not require general anaesthesia or an operating theatre.

Grade III: Surgical Intervention

Grade III haemorrhoids prolapse during straining and require manual reduction. Conservative management and office procedures are usually insufficient at this stage. Surgical treatment under general anaesthesia becomes the standard of care. The three main surgical approaches — Conventional Hemorrhoidectomy, Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy (PPH) and Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) — are all appropriate for Grade III disease. The choice depends on anatomy, patient preference and case complexity.

Grade IV: Surgery Is the Definitive Treatment

Grade IV haemorrhoids are permanently prolapsed and cannot be manually reduced. They carry a significantly higher risk of strangulation, thrombosis and ulceration if left untreated. Surgery is not elective at this stage — it is the recommended and necessary treatment. The case complexity associated with Grade IV disease may increase surgeon fees, operating theatre time and the likelihood of an inpatient rather than day surgery admission.

Haemorrhoid Surgery Cost Breakdown by Procedure

All three main surgical options are covered by MediSave and MediShield Life under the MOH Table of Surgical Procedures (TOSP). The applicable table classification determines your MediSave withdrawal limit.

Conventional Hemorrhoidectomy (Milligan-Morgan / Ferguson)

The traditional surgical excision of haemorrhoidal tissue. It is the gold standard for Grade III and IV disease, particularly where there is a significant external component or concurrent anal pathology.

Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy (PPH: Procedure for Prolapse and Haemorrhoids)

A circular stapling device repositions prolapsing internal haemorrhoidal tissue above the dentate line, simultaneously interrupting blood supply and reducing prolapse — without excising the haemorrhoids themselves. Associated with less post-operative pain than conventional hemorrhoidectomy and a faster return to normal activity.

Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP)

A minimally invasive day surgery procedure in which a diode laser fibre is introduced directly into haemorrhoidal tissue, delivering controlled thermal energy to shrink and fibrose the vascular cushion from within — without excision. No open wound, minimal post-operative pain and rapid return to daily activities within 3 to 7 days. Best suited for Grade II to III internal haemorrhoids without a significant external component.

Utilising MediSave and Integrated Shield Plans

Most patients do not pay out of pocket alone. Several financing schemes can be used in combination to meaningfully reduce your overall costs. Below is an overview of what is available to you.

CPF MediSave

All surgical haemorrhoid procedures on this page are MediSave-claimable. The withdrawal limit is determined by the TOSP Table classification of your procedure. Conventional hemorrhoidectomy and LHP (Table 2C / SF836A) carry a surgical limit of S$1,120, while stapled hemorrhoidopexy (Table 3A / SF837A) carries a limit of S$1,390. For complex cases involving concurrent anal procedures (Table 3B), the limit rises to S$1,740. MediSave can be used to cover the surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee and hospitalisation charges, applied separately from the surgical limit.

Integrated Shield Plans (ISP)

An Integrated Shield Plan, purchased from a private insurer such as AIA, Prudential, Great Eastern, Income, HSBC Life, Singlife or Raffles Health Insurance, sits on top of MediShield Life and provides substantially higher coverage for private hospital stays and surgical fees. Haemorrhoid surgery is a medically necessary procedure covered as a surgical benefit by all major ISP providers in Singapore.

If you hold an ISP that covers private hospital stays, the clinic can apply for a Letter of Guarantee (LOG) on your behalf, enabling cashless admission with minimal upfront payment. If you have a rider covering your deductible and co-insurance, your out-of-pocket for the entire episode from admission to discharge can be as low as S$0 to S$700. Panel membership varies by insurer and hospital — the clinic will confirm this before your procedure is scheduled.

The cashless journey in five steps:
  1. Consultation: Grade confirmed, written fee estimate provided, MediSave balance noted.
  2. Insurance check: Policy verified, pre-authorisation initiated, Letter of Guarantee issued by insurer.
  3. Surgery: Hospital direct-bills insurer, MediSave deducted at discharge, no large upfront deposit required.
  4. Claim: Insurer pays hospital directly, MediShield Life and ISP benefits applied, you pay only the residual.
  5. Follow-up: Post-operative review at one to two weeks, stool softeners and diet plan, activity guide provided.

Recovery, Pain Management and Long-Term Outcomes

Post-Operative Pain: What to Expect

Conventional hemorrhoidectomy carries the most significant post-operative discomfort of the three main techniques — typically one to two weeks of meaningful pain managed with prescribed analgesia, sitz baths and stool softeners. Most patients report the first 48 to 72 hours as the most challenging, with gradual improvement thereafter. Stapled hemorrhoidopexy and laser hemorrhoidoplasty are associated with significantly less post-operative pain — a primary reason many patients opt for these techniques when clinically appropriate.

Pain management after haemorrhoid surgery typically includes:

Recovery Timeline

Procedure Return to Desk Work Return to Physical Activity Full Recovery
Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty 3 to 5 days 2 to 3 weeks 4 to 6 weeks
Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy 5 to 10 days 2 to 3 weeks 4 to 6 weeks
Conventional Hemorrhoidectomy 1 to 2 weeks 3 to 4 weeks 6 to 8 weeks

Recurrence and Long-Term Success

Haemorrhoid surgery has a high long-term success rate. Recurrence rates at five years range from approximately 5 to 15% for conventional hemorrhoidectomy to 15 to 25% for stapled hemorrhoidopexy, depending on patient factors and technique. Laser hemorrhoidoplasty carries recurrence rates broadly comparable to conventional excision in well-selected cases. The single most important factor in preventing recurrence is lifestyle modification: sustained high-fibre intake, adequate hydration, avoidance of prolonged sitting and treatment of chronic constipation or straining.
